Amitalia invites you to a film screening and discussion marking the Week of the Italian Language in the World. 

Eleonora Duse’s legendary career appears to be drawing to a close, but in the fierce times between the Great War and the rise of fascism, “la Divina” feels a calling stronger than any resignation, and returns to where her life began: the stage. 

It is not only the pull of theatre that drives her, but a deeper urgency: the need to assert herself in a world of relentless change that threatens to strip everything away from her, including the independence she earned over a lifetime of work. Unexpected financial setbacks force her to make a choice, and once again, Eleonora chooses theatre as the sole space of truth and resistance. 

With her art as her only weapon, she defies time and disillusionment, turning every word and gesture into a revolutionary act. But the price of beauty in the face of the brutality of power and history is steep: those close to her seem to drift away, and her health declines. Yet Eleonora will face her final journey, proving that one may give up life itself, but never one’s own nature. 

The screening will be followed by an aperitif dinner.
