Marlène Mauris, who has a degree in art history and journalism and communications, was head of cultural promotion at Culture Valais before joining Pro Helvetia in Zurich. In 2019, she leaves her post to take over the Sage grocery shop and continue to be involved in creating cultural events. A poet, grocer, public writer and blogger, Marlène Mauris joined the culture section of the town of Sion in 2024 as a project manager.

Her novel “Escarpées” paints the portrait of a family of mountain dwellers, in a world torn between peaks and abysses, dizzying in its beauty and demands. Every day, the clashes between villagers and passing guests reshape tradition, faith, customs and the use of words. The arrival of a French woman in this house shattered by tragedy shatters this silent intranquility. The novel invites readers to spend a year with this family in the 1990s. Marlène Mauris’ striking writing conveys the clumsiness, excesses, swear words and love of everyday life in the mountains. The illustrations for the novel are by Pierre-Yves Gabioud.
