Based on the last interview with renowned mountain guide, filmmaker, ski instructor, Himalayan mountaineer and father Denis Bertholet, La Montagne des Géants (THE MOUNTAIN OF GIANTS), directed by Manuella Maury and Didier Humbert, is neither a mountain film nor a film about mountains. It is a singular story that raises universal questions:
“What makes us happiest? Absolute individual freedom, or the defence of the community to which we belong?”

Written in the first person, the film takes the form of a visual letter addressed by Manuella Maury to Denis, born in 1929 in Montreux, and to her father Benoît Maury, born in 1935 in Mase, in the Val d’Hérens, where he has rested since 2016.

By intertwining the lives of these two mountaineers she perceives as “giants”, the director and author invites us to reflect on lineage, transmission, and the courage to make choices and take responsibility for their consequences.

The film also unfolds as a journey between the Val d’Hérens and the Khumbu Valley, between Switzerland and Nepal, spanning from the 1940s to the present day.
