Summit Foundation – Clean Mont-Blanc
13.07.2024Laurent Thurnheer, founder and director of the NGO Summit Foundation, talks to us about Clean Mont-Blanc, a scientific research project to raise public awareness of microplastic air pollution.
A symbol of the Alps, the Mont-Blanc massif stretches across France, Switzerland and Italy. In June 2021, samples were taken from the outlets of 18 glaciers at the foot of the massif, as well as from the summit of the legendary mountain. The aim is to analyse atmospheric deposits of microplastics in order to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms by which these particles are transferred to and accumulate in ecosystems.
Led by the French association AQUALTI on the scientific side, in close collaboration with the Summit Foundation on the awareness-raising side, the project’s academic referent is the Université Savoie Mont-Blanc and it relies on a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, researchers, mountaineers and communicators.
