ANANGU PUTINGURU – SPINIFEX PEOPLE FROM THE BUSH

From 13 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, Fondation Opale presents an exhibition dedicated to the art of the Spinifex People, which emerged in the context of a struggle for recognition of their rights to their ancestral lands. Organised in partnership with the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia (USA), the exhibition brings together more than 60 works by internationally renowned artists from the Spinifex Arts Project.

The exhibition explores the relationship between the Anangu Putinguru, or Pila Nguru, often referred to as the Spinifex People, and their Country, a relationship they have maintained for thousands of years. It highlights the evolution and diversity of practices within the Spinifex Arts Project, bringing together works by prominent artists such as Lawrence Pennington, Tjaruwa Woods, Kunmanara (Patju) Presley and Timo Hogan alongside large-scale collaborative paintings. The exhibition offers not only an exceptional presentation of this body of work, but also pays tribute to the resilience of the Spinifex People.
