Namsa Leuba

Born in 1982 in Neuchâtel to a Guinean mother and a Swiss father, Namsa Leuba questions our representation of African identity. Her carefully staged photographs act as mirrors reflecting the preconceived ideas, the imaginary constructions inherited from colonialism and its distorting spectacles of domination, superficiality and folklorization, which still partly shape today’s Western view of the African continent. Drawing from the duality of her cultures, the photographer proposes a hybrid visual reality where the power of representation is returned to the people posing and in which she asks us “who is looking, who is being looked at?”
